Questions to ask before you say yes

Can you do it yourself?

Doable DIY with basic tools and stands; brakes are safety-critical, so only do it if you are confident and re-check every bolt.

Common questions

How long do front pads last?

Often 30,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on how you drive. City stop-and-go wears them faster than highway miles.

Why are my brakes squealing?

It can be the wear indicator telling you the pads are thin, or just dust and glazing. Grinding means metal on metal, so get it checked soon.

Do I need new rotors with new pads?

Not always. Rotors that are thick enough and smooth can be reused or resurfaced, but rough or warped ones should be replaced.

How much does brake pad replacement (front) cost?

A typical range across the US is $190 to $400. That is an estimate from parts prices, labor hours and the local labor rate, not a quote.
