P0171: on a Toyota

How much to fix P0171 on a Toyota? Typically $90 to $460 for vacuum leak repair, the most common fix. This is an estimate, not a quote.

On a Toyota, P0171 usually means unmetered air is getting in after the airflow sensor, or the sensor itself reads low. Toyota engines are tolerant, so the car often runs fine and the light is the only sign for months.

General meaning of P0171: The computer keeps adding extra fuel to make up for something, and it has reached its limit on the side with cylinder 1. This is called running lean, and it usually means unmetered air is sneaking in or fuel is not getting through. See the full P0171 page.

Models to know about

ModelYearsWhat to know
Camry2007 to 2017Four-cylinder and V6 Camrys both set this code once the rubber intake and crankcase hoses age.
Corolla2009 to 2019The air tube between the airflow sensor and the throttle body is a known place for hairline cracks.
Tacoma2005 to 2015The 2.7 and 4.0 engines can lean out from a dirty airflow sensor or a leaking intake joint.
Sienna2004 to 2016V6 vans combine several vacuum hoses with a long intake path, so small leaks add up.

Common causes on a Toyota

  1. Cracked or loose intake air tube. The rubber boot flexes with every engine rock and splits at the folds, where it is hard to see.
  2. Crankcase ventilation hose or valve. A brittle hose, or a valve stuck open, pulls extra air into the intake.
  3. Dirty airflow sensor element. Oil mist from a worn air filter housing coats it and makes it under-report air.
  4. Air-fuel ratio sensor that responds slowly on higher-mileage cars. It reads lean even when the mixture is fine.

NHTSA's public complaint file shows how owners describe this kind of trouble: the 2012 Toyota Camry has 645 complaints on file, and 44 of them use wording like check engine, lean, P0171, rough idle; the 2014 Toyota Corolla has 269 complaints on file, and 16 of them use wording like check engine, lean, P0171, rough idle. Complaints are owner reports, not proof of a cause.

Toyota parts for this code are cheap. The intake tube and PCV hose are small rubber parts, and the airflow sensor is the one expensive item. Used airflow sensors are not worth the savings because the sensor is the part that failed.

Not usually. The car is safe to drive short term, but a lean mixture can hurt the catalytic converter if it goes on for months. Get it checked within a few weeks.

Will a new gas cap fix P0171?

No. A gas cap affects the fuel vapor system codes, not the lean fuel mixture code.

How much does it cost to fix P0171 on a Toyota?

The most common fix, vacuum leak repair, has a typical range of $90 to $460 across the US. That is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your model, engine and shop move it.
