P0430: on a Ford
How much to fix P0430 on a Ford? Typically $430 to $2,325 for catalytic converter replacement, the most common fix. This is an estimate, not a quote.
P0430 is the same test as P0420, but for the other side of a V6 or V8. On a Ford, that is the side your bank 2 sensors sit on. If only one side sets a code, the engine is probably fine and the problem is local to that side.
General meaning of P0430: This is the same check as P0420 but on the second side of a V-style or flat engine. The sensor after the converter is reading too much like the one before it, so the converter on that side is not cleaning the exhaust enough. See the full P0430 page.
Models to know about
| Model | Years | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| F-150 | 2009 to 2020 | V8 and V6 trucks have two converters, one per side. |
| Explorer | 2011 to 2019 | 3.5 and 3.7 V6 engines. |
| Edge | 2011 to 2018 | 3.5 and 3.7 V6, mostly. |
| Expedition | 2007 to 2020 | Big converters, big bills. |
Common causes on a Ford
- Rear oxygen sensor on that bank wearing out.
- Exhaust manifold crack or gasket leak on that bank, which is common on the 5.4 and 3.5 trucks.
- Misfire history on that bank's cylinders.
- Converter plugged from earlier rich running.
NHTSA's public complaint file shows how owners describe this kind of trouble: the 2013 Ford Explorer has 2,237 complaints on file, and 52 of them use wording like catalytic, check engine, P0430. Complaints are owner reports, not proof of a cause.
Check this first
- Confirm which side is bank 2 on your engine. On many Fords it is the passenger side.
- Check for a ticking exhaust leak on that side when cold.
- Compare the two rear sensors in live data.

The hourly rate is the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 average pay for this trade in the US, $27.13 an hour, times 4 to 5.5 to cover what a shop bills (overhead, tools, insurance, profit). Parts are a band from budget aftermarket to the manufacturer part. In California and New York, parts cost more because those states require a California-certified converter. Full method.
Not a repair shop, estimates only. Typical range, estimate. Not a quote. Your car, parts and shop change the number.
Because a V-engine has two converters, a shop may only need to replace one. Ask for the price of one converter and not a pair.
Other repairs that may be involved
| Repair | Typical range, US |
|---|---|
| Catalytic converter replacement | $430 to $2,325 |
| Oxygen sensor replacement (one sensor) | $100 to $350 |
Questions to ask the shop
- Do both sides need work, or only bank 2?
- Is the leak ruled out?
- Can the part be an aftermarket CARB-legal one?

P0430 on a Ford: questions
Why do I only have P0430 and not P0420?
Only one side is failing the test. That is useful because it narrows the repair.
Should I replace both converters?
Not unless both fail the test.
How much does it cost to fix P0430 on a Ford?
The most common fix, catalytic converter replacement, has a typical range of $430 to $2,325 across the US. That is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your model, engine and shop move it.
