P0441: on a Toyota
How much to fix P0441 on a Toyota? Typically $80 to $240 for evap purge valve replacement, the most common fix. This is an estimate, not a quote.
P0441 means the engine computer saw the wrong amount of fuel vapor moving through the purge line. It is an emissions fault, not a safety one, and Toyotas often set it right after a fill-up.
General meaning of P0441: The vapor system routes stored fuel fumes into the engine through a purge valve so they get burned. The computer tested how much gas moved through that path and the amount was wrong, either too little when it opened the valve or flow when it should be shut. See the full P0441 page.
Models to know about
| Model | Years | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Camry | 2007 to 2017 | Purge valve and vent valve both sit near the rear of the car, under the fuel tank area. |
| Corolla | 2009 to 2019 | Often the purge valve at the intake side. |
| Prius | 2010 to 2015 | Hybrids keep the fuel tank sealed under pressure, which changes how this system fails. |
| Tacoma | 2005 to 2015 | Trucks collect road debris near the vapor canister. |
Common causes on a Toyota
- Purge valve (a small solenoid on the engine side) that sticks open. You may notice a hard start after refueling.
- Canister vent valve under the car that clogs with dirt or fails to close.
- Cracked vapor hose near the filler neck. Rust and age do this on cars from snowy states.
- Overfilled tank. Topping off past the click pushes liquid into the charcoal canister and soaks it.
NHTSA's public complaint file shows how owners describe this kind of trouble: the 2011 Toyota Camry has 624 complaints on file, and 7 of them use wording like check engine, EVAP, evaporative, purge. Complaints are owner reports, not proof of a cause.
Check this first
- Stop at the click when you fill up for a few tank fills and see if the light stays off.
- Listen for a click from the engine bay purge valve when the key goes to ON. No click means a possible dead solenoid.
- Ask the shop to run a smoke test of the vapor system before replacing anything.
How this range is built
| Part of the job | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Parts | $25 | $100 |
| Labor: 0.5 to 0.8 hours × $110 to $150 an hour | $55 | $120 |
| Fees: shop supplies, disposal, diagnostics | $0 | $15 |
| Total, rounded | $80 | $240 |
The hourly rate is the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 average pay for this trade in the US, $27.13 an hour, times 4 to 5.5 to cover what a shop bills (overhead, tools, insurance, profit). Parts are a band from budget aftermarket to the manufacturer part. Full method.
Not a repair shop, estimates only. Typical range, estimate. Not a quote. Your car, parts and shop change the number.
The purge valve is usually a modest part and often easy to reach. The canister and vent assembly under the car costs more and needs the tank area opened up.
Other repairs that may be involved
| Repair | Typical range, US |
|---|---|
| EVAP purge valve replacement | $80 to $240 |
| EVAP vent valve replacement | $110 to $330 |
| Gas cap replacement | $5 to $95 |
Questions to ask the shop
- Is it the purge valve or the vent valve, and how did you tell?
- Did you test with smoke?
- Is the part OEM or aftermarket?
