About Fair Price

What Fair Price is

Fair Price is a free website that shows what common car repairs and home jobs usually cost, so you can check a quote before you say yes. You pick the job, type the price you were quoted, and see whether it falls low, fair or high for your area. We are not a repair shop or a contractor, and we do not do the work.

How the prices are made

Every range is an estimate. We start from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics average hourly pay for the trade in your area (May 2025 data), multiply it to cover what a shop or contractor bills, multiply by the hours the job usually takes, and add a band for parts or materials and for fees. The parts bands and hour counts are our own drafted estimates, checked against public cost guides. Ranges for home jobs were checked against several of those guides in October 2026. No real customer quotes are behind the ranges yet. The full method, with the numbers, is on the methods page.

What a verdict means

A verdict compares your price to our range. It says something about a number, never about a shop. When a range is very wide, we say so and soften the verdict.

Who runs it

Fair Price is run by the same operator as JunkRun (junk removal) and Snow Pass (snow plowing) in Massachusetts. Where a page sends you to either one, it says so. See the affiliate disclosure for how the site earns money.
