The hourly rate is the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 average pay for this trade in the US, $27.13 an hour, times 4 to 5.5 to cover what a shop bills (overhead, tools, insurance, profit). Parts are a band from budget aftermarket to the manufacturer part. Full method.

Old brake fluid is pushed out and replaced with fresh fluid. Fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers braking performance and can rust parts inside the system.

Questions to ask before you say yes

Can you do it yourself?

Doable with a helper and a bleeder kit, but brakes are safety-critical; skip it if you are unsure, and never let the reservoir run dry.

Common questions

How often should brake fluid be changed?

Most makers say every 2 to 3 years, no matter how many miles you drive. Moisture builds up with age, not just use.

Why does my pedal feel soft?

Air or old fluid can make the pedal feel spongy. A worn hose, a leak, or a failing part can too, so a shop should check before assuming it is just the fluid.

Is dark fluid always bad?

Dark fluid is a sign it is old and has picked up debris, and it is worth replacing. A moisture test strip is a better guide than color alone.

How much does brake fluid flush cost?

A typical range across the US is $75 to $180. That is an estimate from parts prices, labor hours and the local labor rate, not a quote.
