Old transmission fluid is drained or flushed and replaced. It helps the transmission shift smoothly and last longer, and is done every 30,000 to 60,000 miles on many cars.

Questions to ask before you say yes

Can you do it yourself?

Possible for a handy DIYer on cars with a drain plug and fill plug; using the wrong fluid or underfilling can damage the transmission.

Common questions

How often is it needed?

Many manuals say 60,000 miles for normal driving and sooner for towing or heavy city driving. Some cars list the fluid as lifetime, but changing it still helps.

Can a fluid change fix slipping?

It can help with minor shift issues from worn fluid, but it won't repair damaged parts. Fluid on a high-mileage unit that was never changed is a case to ask your shop about.

Is a flush better than a drain and fill?

Not always. A drain and fill replaces about a third to half of the fluid, while an exchange replaces most. Follow what your manufacturer allows.

How much does transmission fluid service cost?

A typical range across the US is $140 to $480. That is an estimate from parts prices, labor hours and the local labor rate, not a quote.
