This is the range for the most common fix, mass airflow sensor replacement. Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.
The mass airflow sensor measures how much air enters the engine so the computer can add the right amount of fuel. The number it reported does not match what the throttle position and engine speed say should be flowing, so either the sensor is wrong or the air path has an issue.
- Safe to drive?
- Usually yes, for now
- Most common cause
- Dirty mass airflow sensor
Usually safe for short trips, but the car may run poorly; stop if it stalls or hesitates dangerously.

- Poor mileage
- Occasional stalling
Common causes, most likely first
- Dirty mass airflow sensor
- Air leak after the sensor
- Clogged air filter
- Damaged intake tube
- Failed sensor
Check this first
Inspect the air filter and the rubber intake boot for cracks. Try spray cleaner made for MAF sensors.

Before you pay
- Ask the shop what test showed this part is the cause, not just that the code appeared.
- Ask for parts and labor listed separately, and for the hours.
- Ask for a written OK before any extra work. Many states require written authorization before repairs.

P0101 questions
Is the MAF easy to replace?
Usually yes. It sits in the intake tube, held by a couple of screws and a plug. The part itself can be pricey on some models, so confirm the diagnosis before buying one.
Will cleaning it help?
Often, when the code is new and the sensor wire is just coated with dust or oil film. A small can of cleaner made for these sensors costs little, but never touch the wire with a brush or cloth.
Can an oiled air filter cause this?
Yes. Over-oiled reusable filters can leave a film on the sensor wire, which makes it read low. If you use one, clean the sensor and be careful not to over-oil the filter next time.
How much does it cost to fix P0101?
The most common fix, mass airflow sensor replacement, has a typical range of $120 to $390 across the US. It is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your car and shop change it.
