Engine, timing and cooling: repair costs
Timing belts and chains, water pumps, radiators and gaskets. Typical ranges across the US.
- Timing belt replacement$460 to $1,550. The rubber timing belt keeps engine valves and pistons in sync and must be replaced on schedule. If it breaks, many engines suffer major internal damage.
- Timing chain replacement$1,125 to $2,550. A stretched or noisy timing chain, guides and tensioner are replaced. Signs include rattle on startup, timing codes, or a rough-running engine.
- Water pump replacement$280 to $1,150. The water pump moves coolant through the engine. A leaking, noisy or failing pump can cause overheating and should be replaced quickly.
- Thermostat replacement$100 to $420. The thermostat controls engine temperature. A stuck one can cause overheating, no heat from the vents, or poor mileage.
- Radiator replacement$300 to $1,025. A leaking or clogged radiator is replaced so the engine can cool itself. Signs include coolant leaks, overheating and a sweet smell.
- Valve cover gasket replacement$170 to $660. A leaking valve cover gasket is replaced to stop oil seeping onto the engine. Signs include a burning oil smell, oil on the engine, or spark plug well leaks.
- Engine mount replacement$210 to $720. A worn or broken engine mount is replaced. Signs include clunking, shaking at idle, or the engine moving too much when you accelerate.
- Head gasket replacement$1,325 to $3,775. A blown head gasket is replaced to stop coolant, oil or pressure from leaking between engine parts. Signs include overheating, white smoke and milky oil.
