Common questions

Do timing chains last forever?

They last longer than belts, often 100,000 to 200,000 miles, but stretched chains and worn tensioners are common, especially with old oil.

What does a bad chain sound like?

A stretched chain can rattle or whine, especially at a cold start. You may also see a check engine light for cam and crank timing. Get it checked soon, since a skipped chain can damage the engine.

Is the cost worth it on an old car?

Compare the repair to the value of the car. If the engine is otherwise healthy, many owners do repair it.

How much does timing chain replacement cost?

A typical range across the US is $1,125 to $2,550. That is an estimate from parts prices, labor hours and the local labor rate, not a quote.
