Fuel and air code
P2097: Fuel mix too rich after catalytic converter (bank 1)
How much to fix P2097? Typically $100–$350.
How this range is built
| Part of the job | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Parts | $40 | $180 |
| Labor: 0.6 to 1 hours × $110 to $150 an hour | $66 | $150 |
| Fees: shop supplies, disposal, diagnostics | $0 | $15 |
| Total, rounded | $100 | $350 |
The hourly rate is the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 average pay for this trade in the US, $27.13 an hour, times 4 to 5.5 to cover what a shop bills (overhead, tools, insurance, profit). Parts are a band from budget aftermarket to the manufacturer part. Full method.

This is the range for the most common fix, oxygen sensor replacement (one sensor). Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.
The computer uses the oxygen sensor behind the catalytic converter to double-check the front sensor, and on cylinder 1's side it says the mix is too rich even after the usual corrections. Extra fuel, a worn sensor or a tired converter could all show this way.
- Safe to drive?
- Usually yes, for now
- Most common cause
- Rear oxygen sensor failing
Safe for short drives, but a rich mix can harm the converter, so get it checked.

What you may notice
- Check-engine light on
- Fuel smell or black soot at the tailpipe
- Lower fuel economy
Common causes, most likely first
- Rear oxygen sensor failing
- Leaking injector
- Contaminated sensor
- Failing converter
- Rich fuel mix upstream
Check this first
Check whether any other rich-running codes such as P0172 are stored at the same time. If so, fix that first. Also change a dirty air filter and look for fuel in the oil, which suggests a leaking injector.
Other repairs that sometimes fix P2097
| Repair | Typical range, US |
|---|---|
| Fuel injector replacement (one injector) | $170 to $820 |
| Catalytic converter replacement | $430 to $2,325 |
| Diagnostic scan (check engine light) | $55 to $250 |
Before you pay
- Ask the shop what test showed this part is the cause, not just that the code appeared.
- Ask for parts and labor listed separately, and for the hours.
- Ask for a written OK before any extra work. Many states require written authorization before repairs.

P2097 questions
Is it about the catalyst?
It can be, but sensors and rich-running causes are checked first because they are cheaper and more common. A converter is blamed only when the live readings show it no longer cleans the exhaust.
Could an oil leak cause it?
Yes. When oil burns in the engine, residue can coat the oxygen sensor and change its readings. If you are adding oil between changes, tell the shop so they check for that as well.
Is it urgent?
Plan to fix it within a few weeks, not months. A rich mix wastes fuel and can overheat the catalytic converter over time, which is a far more expensive part to replace.
How much does it cost to fix P2097?
The most common fix, oxygen sensor replacement (one sensor), has a typical range of $100 to $350 across the US. It is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your car and shop change it.
